If you are preparing to hire an electrician to perform work in your home, then you probably want to make sure that you hire the right person. This is important whether you are having your entire home's electrical system rewired or if you are simply having a few light fixtures or electrical outlets installed. These are some of the things that you should be able to count on your residential electrician to have when they arrive at your home.

1. Electrician's License

First of all, you should never hire anyone who is not properly licensed as an electrician, even if they claim to have knowledge and experience. For example, even though you might trust your handyman to help with a lot of projects around the house, you shouldn't rely on them to help you with electrical work that you need to have done in your home.

In order to have an electrician's license, these professionals have to undergo certain training and pass certain exams to show that they are properly trained and competent. The electrician that you hire should be more than happy to let you know that they have an electrician's license in your state, so be wary if you find someone who dodges this question.

2. Liability Insurance

Next, you should make sure that the electrician that you hire has liability insurance. As you probably already realize, electrical work can be incredibly dangerous. There are also a variety of things that can go wrong when you're having electrical work done. Hopefully, you will not have to worry about anything going wrong or anyone getting hurt if you hire the right electrician for the job.

However, in the event that there is an accident, you will probably feel better knowing that your electrician has liability insurance. For example, this can help cover medical bills for anyone who might get hurt and can help cover things like damage to your home. Because of all of this, you should not hire an electrician unless you know that they have proper liability insurance in place.

3. Tools

Lastly, you should only hire a residential electrician if they have the proper tools for the job. Electricians should have testing equipment that they can use to test your wires and electrical outlets. They should also have ladders and scaffolds, which might be needed when they're installing light fixtures or wiring. An electrician who shows up with the proper tools and materials should be able to get the job done right.
